Briceño Slams Illegal Abductions Amid Pop Case Questions
Prime Minister John Briceño stressed that the government stands against any act of kidnapping by individuals entering Belize. His comments come after questions resurfaced about the shocking 2023 case involving Toledo resident, Sebastian Pop. You’ll remember, Pop was snatched by a mob of Guatemalans and taken across the border to face murder allegations. Since then, he’s been tried in a Guatemalan court and sentenced to thirty years for femicide. Today, reporters pressed the PM for his thoughts on the matter, and he didn’t mince words.

“Obviously that just came to light to us. Nobody came to make any kind of report to us that this happened. I think it was in 2023 and we could not take action if we did not know about. The ministry of foreign affairs have already taken steps and writing a diplomatic note. This man seems to be accused of murder in Guatemala. We do not condone anyone coming into our country and abducting people illegally, but also if you committed a crime elsewhere I think we cant turn our heads to that.”
