Tragic Drowning at Swasey River Leaves Family Grieving
A family outing at the Swasey River on Saturday afternoon ended in tragedy when seventeen-year-old Elroy Cal was swept away by strong currents. His father, Thomas Cal, immediately jumped in to try to save him. Both father and son were swept away. Rescue efforts by villagers led to the recovery of their bodies later that evening. The incident has left the family reeling from the sudden loss of a father and son. We spoke with Assistant Commissioner of Police Hilberto Romero, who gave us more details.

“On Saturday, police responded to a report of a drowning at the Swasey River. On arrival, they learned that two persons had attempted to rescue a male person who was in the river. This person was successfully rescued; however, the other two persons were dragged by the current, and they did not resurface. They were identified as Thomas Cal and Elroy Cal. With help from the villagers, searches were done where the bodies were recovered. The bodies are presently awaiting a post-mortem examination.”

“Were there any safety warnings or concerns about swimming in that section of the river?”

“I do not know if there were safety warnings; however, the river is deep and there are strong currents in that area.”
