Woman Police Officer in Critical Condition After Hit-and-Run

A police officer is in a critical condition after a hit and run on the George Price Highway early Sunday morning. Reports are that around 1:30 a.m. near Mile 68, a dark SUV crashed into a motorcycle carrying two officers and then fled the scene.

Police Constable Karen August was the passenger and was rushed to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital with life-threatening injuries. PC Hamilton was driving the motorcycle and also sustained injuries but has since been discharged from hospital.

August had just finished off her shift at the Kontiki Substation and was on her way home to Succotz Village when the crash occurred. Community members described her as a very friendly officer who served previously at the Santa Elena Police Formation.

San Ignacio and Santa Elena community members are organising a $1 drive, a barbecue sale at the Cayo Welcome Center and other fundraising efforts to assist with mounting medical expenses.
