Flood Alerts Issued for Central and Southern Belize
The government has issued flood alerts for several parts of the country, warning residents in vulnerable areas to exercise extreme caution.
According to the Friday afternoon forecast, Regions 7 and 9 are expected to remain at normal levels, while Regions 11 and 13 are experiencing above-normal river conditions.
In Region 7, the Rio Hondo at Blue Creek North, Santa Cruz, San Antonio, San Roman, and Douglas to the coast is below normal, while the New River at Hill Bank, Tower Hill, and Caledonia remains steady at normal levels.
In Region 9, rivers are generally low. The Mopan River at Benque Viejo Town, the Macal River at San Ignacio, and the Belize River at More Tomorrow and Double Run are all below normal. Crooked Tree Lagoon is also below normal.
Concerns are highest in Region 11, where the Southern Lagoon at Gales Point Village is above normal. Flood alerts have been issued for the Sittee River at Kendal Bridge and the Moho River at Blue Creek South and Jordan, which are showing increasing water levels. Other rivers in the area, including the Sibun, Monkey, Deep, Golden Stream, Rio Grande, and Temash, remain below normal.
In Region 13, the Sarstoon River is below normal.
Authorities caution that flood alerts are also in effect for urban and inland rural areas across northern and central Belize. Conditions are expected to persist into Saturday night and early Sunday before returning to normal by the end of the weekend.
