Ministry Extends Condolences After 4-year-old Death in Fire
The Ministry of Public Service, Governance, and Disaster Risk Management has extended condolences to the family of four-year-old Kyra Bennett, who died in a house fire early Tuesday morning in Belize City.
“Losing a loved one, especially a child, is an unimaginable pain, and our thoughts and prayers are with them as they navigate this difficult period,” the Ministry said. “We stand in solidarity with the family during this time of immense grief and sorrow.”
Police said the fire started around 4:30 a.m. A neighbour noticed smoke and alerted Kyra’s mother, 28-year-old Jowel Guerra.
Guerra escaped the house, but Kyra, who was asleep beside her, remained inside. Reports are that Guerra and another relative tried to enter the burning home to save Kyra but were unable to gain access.
The two-storey house was completely destroyed, and police confirmed that Scenes of Crime Technicians recovered the charred remains of the child from the debris.
Kyra had just started Saint Martin’s Preschool this September.
