Flood Warning Issued for Central and Southern Belize

The Ministry of Sustainable Development has issued a flood warning for Belize City and several communities in the central and southern regions of the country, as river levels continue to rise.

According to the latest forecast, Regions 11 and 13 are experiencing flooding conditions, while Regions 7 and 9 remain at normal levels. Authorities warn that the situation is expected to persist over the next 24 hours in both urban and rural areas.

In Region 11, flood levels are reported on the Sittee River at Kendal Bridge, with the Sibun River at Freetown Sibun and the Southern Lagoon at Gales Point Village holding above-normal levels. The Deep River at Medina Bank is approaching bankfull, while the Golden Stream River at Hellgate is already above bankfull levels. The Moho River at Jordan and the Temash River at Crique Sarco are also under stress.

Meanwhile, the Sarstoon River in Region 13 remains above normal levels, adding to concerns for southern Belize.

In contrast, river systems in the north and west, including the Rio Hondo, Mopan, Macal, and Belize Rivers, remain below or at normal levels.

The government is urging residents in flood-prone areas, particularly in Belize City, to remain on high alert and take necessary precautions.
