Showers in the Forecast, but the Spirit of Independence Shines Bright
As Belize gears up to celebrate its 44th Independence Anniversary on Sunday, September 21, forecasters are warning that moist and unstable weather conditions could put a damper on some of the planned festivities. The National Meteorological Service reports that gusty winds, rough seas, and heavy rainfall are expected over the next two days, raising concerns for outdoor events and parades scheduled across the country.
A small craft caution has been issued, with operators advised to exercise extreme care as occasional strong winds and choppy seas are likely near showers and thunderstorms. An excessive rainfall watch is also in effect, with up to four inches of rain possible, particularly over central and southern Belize. Residents in flood-prone areas are being urged to stay alert and closely monitor weather updates.
While most activities are still expected to go ahead, officials warn that sudden downpours could disrupt some of the festivities.
In the broader region, Tropical Storm Gabrielle was located at 3:00 a.m. near latitude 21.9N, longitude 54.8W, about 595 miles east-northeast of the northern Leeward Islands. The storm is moving west-northwest at 12 miles per hour with maximum sustained winds of 50 miles per hour. Meteorologists confirm that Gabrielle poses no threat to Belize.
