Expert Predicts ICJ Ruling Could Go Against Guatemala

The long-standing border dispute between Belize and Guatemala remains in the hands of the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Rodrigo Montúfar, an expert in international relations, believes Belize’s approach to environmental preservation could play a key role in the court’s decision.

“Guatemala could possibly get six votes in its favour, possibly nine against, but there is another factor to consider,” Montúfar said.

He explained that “Even if a judge might lean toward Guatemala, they [judges] will notice that Belize has maintained its forests and protected national parks, while Guatemala’s lands show significant deforestation.”

He added, “Anyone can see this by looking at the maps online. Belize is largely green; Guatemala shows brown patches. This is important for the judges who also consider environmental protection in their rulings.”

The ICJ’s decision is expected to have far-reaching consequences for both countries, which would affect the territorial claims and the management and preservation of natural resources in the region.

Montúfar gave his thoughts on the outcome, saying, “I have the suspicion that the verdict of the International Court of Justice will be adverse to Guatemala.”
