Trump Blasts UN, Immigration Policies, and Green Energy in Fiery UN Speech

U.S. President Donald Trump delivered a combative and wide-ranging address at the 80th United Nations General Assembly, attacking the UN’s credibility, criticising global migration policies, and dismissing renewable energy initiatives as a “green energy scam”.

Speaking for nearly an hour, Trump accused the UN of “creating problems rather than solving them”, pointing specifically to international assistance for migrants, which he claimed was undermining Western nations. “Your countries are going to hell,” he warned, urging leaders to abandon open-border policies.

The president also derided climate change measures, falsely claiming renewable energy is more expensive than fossil fuels. He argued that U.S. tariffs are a necessary tool to defend American “sovereignty and security”, adding, “We’ve used tariffs as a defence mechanism under the Trump administration.”

On foreign policy, Trump reaffirmed his call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza while rejecting recent moves by several European countries to recognise a Palestinian state. He described such recognition as “a reward for Hamas”, insisting that hostages must be released before peace talks move forward.

The U.S. leader also scolded European nations for continuing to purchase Russian energy despite the war in Ukraine, saying, “They have to immediately cease all energy purchases from Russia. Otherwise, we’re all wasting a lot of time.”

“What is the purpose of the United Nations?” he asked. “For the most part, all they seem to do is write a really strongly worded letter and then never follow that letter up.”

The speech, which ran far over the allotted 15 minutes, drew scattered laughter from delegates but largely underscored Trump’s recurring theme: that the United Nations is failing to live up to its potential.
