PM Briceño and FM Fonseca at UNGA 80
Belize’s diplomatic agenda is in full swing at the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), with Prime Minister John Briceño leading the national delegation and Foreign Minister Francis Fonseca holding key bilateral and multilateral meetings.
Fonseca met with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand and the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Albert Ramdin, to advance partnerships and reaffirm shared priorities on governance, security, and development.
Fonseca also engaged with Commonwealth Secretary General Shirley Botchwey and Guyana’s Foreign Minister Hugh Todd. During the session, Fonseca briefed the Commonwealth ministers on the ongoing Belize–Guatemala process, highlighting recent tensions in the Sarstoon River and Belize’s maritime space.
The Foreign Minister thanked the Commonwealth for its recent statement of “strong support for Belize’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
The 80th UN General Assembly, taking place in New York, brings together world leaders to debate pressing global issues including climate change, conflict, sustainable development, and reform of multilateral institutions.
