Yes or No to Weed Referendum?

The “Legalize It Caye Caulker Campaign” has been officially launched ahead of the October 8 referendum. Residents will decide whether the island supports a regulated and taxable cannabis industry.

Councillor Ilya Rosado, who is leading the effort, said the campaign is focused on giving residents clear and accurate information before they cast their vote. “This campaign is about education, transparency, and empowerment,” he said.

In the campaign video, Rosado added, “It’s not about voting yes or no to smoking cannabis, but rather yes or no to regulation, safety and local revenue.”

Minister of Home Affairs and New Growth Industries, Kareem Musa, also spoke in the campaign video, stating that the upcoming October 8th ” island referendum is to decide whether we move forward with a responsible and regulated cannabis industry or whether we continue the illegal trade.”

Musa explained that cannabis possession has been legal since 2017 and that the decision now rests on whether residents want regulation.

He explained that the proposed regulations would involve setting an age limit, implementing identification checks, ensuring quality standards, and creating designated points for sale and consumption.
