Here are NEMO’s Flood and Weather Warnings

The National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) has issued a public notice warning residents of heavy rainfall, localised flooding, and hazardous road conditions.

According to NEMO, rainfall over the past 33 hours has brought heavy showers and thunderstorms across much of the country, with the South and Central areas most affected.

Bella Vista in Toledo recorded the highest rainfall at 135 mm (5.3 inches).

NEMO stated that Tropical Storm Gabrielle is far out in the Atlantic and poses no threat to Belize. Two other systems in the Atlantic are being monitored, but none currently endanger the country.

NEMO also reported that high flood risks and strong thunderstorms with gusty winds and dangerous lightning are expected today and tonight.

Flood warnings are in effect for the Sibun, Sittee, Golden Stream, Rio Grande, Moho, and Temash rivers. Flash flood warnings apply to watersheds off the Eastern Slope of the Maya Mountains.

Drivers in Cayo are urged to exercise caution near Mile 43 on the George Price Highway in Harmonyville. NEMO added that the Selena Bridge in Selena Village is currently impassable.

The Nohoch Che’en Caves Branch is currently closed until further notice.

Several bridges in Toledo, including in Aguacate, Blue Creek, Columbia villages, San Marcus, Trio Village, and Monkey River, are impassable.

Only high vehicles can currently pass in Los Tambos Village in Cayo District and portions of Monkey River in Toledo District under extreme caution.
