BPA Pushes Back Against Claims of Irregularities
The Belize Port Authority (BPA) is setting the record straight tonight. Allegations recently surfaced in a media interview, suggesting that government agencies cut corners during the departure and return of vessels that took part in the Legacy of Champions fishing tournament in Roatán, Honduras. But the Port Authority says that’s simply not true. After going over all the paperwork, they confirm every clearance, inspection, and fee was handled by the book. The BPA insists it will not tolerate false accusations against its officers and stresses that its procedures are there to keep Belize’s waters safe and secure. We spoke with Ports Commissioner Kaylon Young, who commented further on the matter.
Kaylon Young, Ports Commissioner, BPA
“ There were allegations of irregularities, from government agencies, which included the Belize Port of Authority, but we are certain that our officers did what they were supposed to do. By procedures, all phones collected, were issued receipts for phones collected, and all documentation was accepted. And so we just wanted the public to understand that it’s not everything that you hear, is true. We pose ourself to try to be very, very sincere and try to protect and preserve our maritime environment and, and safe waters. We don’t want that to be tainted by this. Any allegations of such. It is a hard job to monitor every single thing, but I know that for sure. Those procedures were followed and the allegations made against the port were false”
