Twenty-Eight Youths Honoured for Turning Their Lives Around
Twenty-eight young Belizeans who once faced serious struggles have been celebrated for turning their lives around. They are the recipients of the Youth Resiliency Award, which recognises transformation and growth through rehabilitation and reintegration.
Diversion Coordinator Jashua Estelle explained the importance of the event, stating, “It’s about acknowledging the transformation that happens within these young individuals. Oftentimes we overlook the challenge that it takes them to change the course of their life. We want to highlight that moment, that positive change in behaviour.”
Among the awardees was 26-year-old landscaper Jerome Vasques. He said, “Some of the things I’ve been doing are staying focused, working hard, and building a family. I’ve made a lot of people happy with the work I do.”
Meanwhile, 17-year-old Keith Dawson also expressed gratitude for his recognition. “I got a leadership award, and I’m actually surprised; I didn’t expect it. I learnt a lot about how to behave and how to have more respect. I have been working, chopping yards, helping others around, and doing community service.”
The initiative is led by the Community Rehabilitation Department with support from UNICEF.
