Belizean Appointed Regional Fisheries Director
Belizean scientist Dr. Abel Antonio Carrias has been named Regional Director of the Central American Fisheries and Aquaculture Organization (OSPESCA) for the 2025–2029 term.
His appointment was confirmed on September 24 by OSPESCA’s Council of Ministers, led by Panama’s Agriculture Minister Roberto Linares.
Dr. Carrias holds a Ph.D. in Fisheries and Allied Aquaculture from Auburn University and has over 14 years of experience in government, academia, and international consultancy. He has worked on more than 25 regional projects with partners such as the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, the World Wildlife Fund, and The Nature Conservancy.
Dr. Carrias said he is committed to advancing regional cooperation and ensuring the long-term sustainability of fisheries and aquaculture in Central America.
