Jaguar Found Shot, Mutilated in Stann Creek

A female jaguar was discovered dead in the Malacate area of Independence Village, Stann Creek District, yesterday. The Belize Forest Department confirmed the carcass was in an advanced state of decomposition and weighed about one hundred and ten pounds. Investigators found the jaguar had been shot and one of its canines removed. The Forest Department subsequently buried the animal. The department “strongly condemns this act and stresses that jaguars are fully protected under the Laws of Belize.” It added, “Jaguars are not only a national symbol but also a keystone species, playing a critical role in maintaining healthy ecosystems.” Authorities warned that killing, possessing, or trading jaguars or their body parts carries fines of up to ten thousand dollars. Offenders “will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.” Last month a joint operation between the Forest Department and police led to the confiscation of a jaguar pelt in Belize City. In that case, Lidear Lino was found in possession of the jaguar pelt and has since been charged under the Wildlife Protection Act. Lino attempted to sell the jaguar pelt via social media.
