BDF, Coast Guard to be Deployed to Old Capital Amid Crime Surge
Minister of Home Affairs Kareem Musa has confirmed plans to deploy members of the Belize Defence Force and the Belize Coast Guard to Belize City. Their purpose will be to assist the Belize Police Department in fighting crime in the St. Martin’s area following a surge in gang-related violence.
Musa said the decision followed recent shootings that injured a two-year-old and a ten-year-old, calling the situation urgent. “It is absolutely critical that adjustments were made,” he said, adding that the deployment is temporary and meant to reinforce police efforts rather than militarise the streets.
He explained the move comes amid concerns of bias and rising tensions among rival groups. “There is a perception that there might be some sort of bias towards one or the other, and when that happens, it certainly creates some sort of tension,” Musa noted.
The minister also addressed concerns about high-powered firearms used in recent shootings, including incidents on the Northern Highway and Majestic Alley. “We have to understand the critical nature of crime and violence in this country right now,” he said, explaining the need for additional security personnel.
He stressed that the goal is to improve public safety without increasing the use of force, adding that the administration remains committed to avoiding abusive policing while stepping up efforts to curb gang violence.
