UDP Senator Observes Caye Caulker’s Weed Referendum

By the end of today, Caye Caulker will make history as residents vote “yes” or “no” on whether to legalise the production and sale of cannabis on the island.

Among those observing the process is UDP Senator Gabriel Zetina, who said his presence on the island is as an observer “to see what the people of Caye Caulker want for the community.”

Zetina said both campaigns have made strong arguments and believes the outcome should reflect what residents want for their community.

He added that if the vote favours legalisation, “proper infrastructure” and regulation will be key to protecting children and locals, and by extension the tourism industry.

He stated that if the proposal fails, the pro-cannabis group must reassess its approach. Driving the pro-cannabis campaign is Councillor Ilya Rosado. He says this push from his part comes for the benefit of the island.

Rosado explained on Monday that the weed legalisation proposal stipulates that 50% of the revenue generated will be allocated directly to the island’s funds. This funding is intended to support the island’s advancements in education, infrastructure, and healthcare.

We also asked Zetina if today’s events may trigger a national referendum; he responded, stating, “This has national implications. At least that’s my view, and it could potentially happen for sure.”

News 5 is currently on the ground. For the better part of this morning, things have been moving slowly.

Chief Elections Officer Josephine Tamai stated on Monday that “for persons who want to stay at home thinking that their voices will be heard, I want to encourage them to come out because that is the only way either your yes or no votes will be counted if you come out and cast your votes.”

Polls close at 6 p.m.
