The President of the Belize Council of Churches, Bishop Phillip Wright, also shared his thoughts after today’s meeting. He says this is really about continuing an ongoing dialogue between church and state. And when asked about the church’s role in the recent cannabis referendum in Caye Caulker, Bishop Wright made it clear, that’s exactly why these conversations matter. He believes the church and government need to be at the table regularly, tackling social issues together.

“I think it is best to see today’s meeting as an ongoing dialogue between the church and the administration. We continue to talk about the long-cherished relationship between church and state and how that relationship continue to evolve as we face new issues and enter a new era and I find this ongoing dialogue has become a wonderful way in moving this process along.”

Paul Lopez

“How do you see this relationship evolving, especially when you consider the church’s role in the recent referendum?”

Bishop Phillip Wright

“And that is precisely why dialogue is necessary because at times we will be seeing the same issues differently. But if we have a forum like this meeting to discuss our differences, to understand each other side on the matter and hopefully out of that reach greater consensus when necessary and possible then I think that is better for the nation and for our people.”
