Home Affairs Ministry Reacts to Murder of Cop

A Belize City police officer was shot and killed on Friday night while on his way to work. In a statement issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs and New Growth Industries, it reported that 44-year-old PC Oswald Young was travelling in uniform to report for duty at the Belama Police Station when he was ambushed in Unitedville Village around 9:40 p.m.

According to the ministry, the shooting was a targeted attack on a member of the Belize Police Department.

“This was a targeted attack on a member of the Belize Police Department, and it is being treated with the highest level of urgency,” the ministry said. “The Ministry condemns this criminal act in the strongest possible terms and stands firmly behind the ongoing police investigation to bring those responsible to justice.”

Police Minister Kareem Musa assured the public that every effort is being made to find and prosecute those responsible. “We will not rest until the person or persons responsible are found and prosecuted,” he said. “He was a public servant in uniform, and his murder is an attack on the rule of law itself.”
