Police continue to investigate the fatal shooting of 42-year-old Police Constable Oswald Young, who was gunned down in Unitedville, Cayo, on Friday night.

According to police, the incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. while Young was waiting for transportation to Belize City, where he was scheduled to report for duty at the Belama Precinct Four Police Station.

“Upon police response, the body of Oswald Young, a Belizean police officer of Unitedville Village, was observed to be exhibiting gunshot wounds,” said Assistant Superintendent of Police Stacy Smith.

She added, “It is reported that at that time, an unknown male person approached him and fired several shots.”

Young was in uniform at the time of his attack. He had been in the force for 23 years.

Smith stated that “no motive has been determined yet” but confirmed that “police have been conducting their investigation, and efforts are being made to bring the person(s) who are responsible for this incident to justice.”

“There are several theories that have been presented to police, and we are following up on them,” Smith added.
