Deadly Floods Cut Off Hundreds in Mexico

There’s devastation in Mexico tonight where more than three hundred communities are still cut off after deadly landslides and flooding. At least sixty-four lives have been lost, and dozens remain missing. Thousands of soldiers and rescue crews are racing to reopen roads and deliver food and water to remote towns, but officials warn the full scale of the disaster is still unknown. The flooding was triggered by two tropical storms slamming into Mexico’s west coast at the tail end of an unusually heavy rainy season. Rivers overflowed, hillsides collapsed, and entire villages were swallowed by mud. In Veracruz alone, twenty-nine people died and more than three hundred thousand residents were affected. President Claudia Sheinbaum says reopening roads is the top priority, while health teams scramble to prevent dengue outbreaks. Helicopters are ferrying supplies, and the government vows to spare no expense to get help where it’s needed most.
