Mexico Floods Leave Nearly 130 Dead or Missing

Nearly 130 reported dead or missing following days of torrential rain and flooding across central Mexico, with Veracruz, Hidalgo, Puebla, Querétaro, and San Luis Potosí among the hardest-hit states. The disaster has left communities isolated and caused widespread damage to roads, bridges, and homes.

President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed the death toll during her Tuesday morning press conference, noting that cleanup and aid efforts are underway. She emphasised that federal, state, and municipal agencies have been working in coordination since the beginning of the crisis. “We’re not going to wait,” she said, pledging swift assistance to affected residents.

According to federal officials, more than 200 incidents have disrupted highways, and 39 bridges have been damaged. Army and Navy personnel are assisting with debris removal and delivering food and water to remote areas using 41 helicopters. In Poza Rica, Veracruz, where Sheinbaum recently visited, 800 government workers will conduct a damage census to assess needs and distribute aid.

Health authorities are also focused on preventing disease outbreaks, particularly dengue, which thrives in standing water left by the floods. Cleanup crews are prioritising sanitation, and additional machinery and personnel have been deployed to overwhelmed municipalities.

Despite the scale of the disaster, Sheinbaum defended the government’s preparedness, stating that no meteorological data had predicted rainfall of such magnitude. As recovery efforts continue, the government faces mounting pressure to improve early warning systems and disaster response infrastructure.
