GOB Warns of Fake AI Video Promising Quick Returns
The Government of Belize is issuing a warning to the public regarding a circulating “fake news” video on social media that falsely urges viewers to invest money for quick financial returns. The video, in Spanish, features images of well-known Belizean personalities but is entirely AI-generated and not authentic.
Authorities stress that these types of scams are becoming increasingly common as artificial intelligence technology advances. AI-generated videos, often called “deepfakes,” can convincingly manipulate images, audio, and video to make individuals appear to say or do things they never actually did.
These AI videos can be highly deceptive and dangerous. Belizeans are strongly cautioned not to share personal information or send money in response to such content.
How to Spot Fake AI Videos:
- Check the source – Verify if the video comes from a reputable news outlet or official organization.
- Look for inconsistencies – Unnatural facial movements, distorted voices, or mismatched lighting can be a giveaway.
- Reverse search images – Key frames from videos can be reverse-searched to confirm authenticity.
- Cross-reference claims – Legitimate investment opportunities are never promoted through viral social media videos.
- Stay skeptical of “get rich quick” messages – High-return promises with no verifiable backing are almost always scams.
Experts warn that as AI technology becomes more accessible, deepfake scams targeting personal finances, political influence, and misinformation campaigns will likely increase. The public is urged to remain vigilant, report suspicious content, and verify all online claims before taking action.
