$3 Million Boost for Greener, Deforestation-Free Farming
Belize has received a BZD $3 million grant from the Italian government to boost sustainable and deforestation-free farming.
The funding, given by the Italian Ministry of Environment and Energy Security, will support projects that help farmers grow crops in ways that protect the country’s forests and environment. It also aims to help local producers connect with national and international markets that value “green” and responsibly sourced goods.
The grant will support the Sustainable and Inclusive Belize Program, which is already backed by the Inter-American Development Bank. Together, the programs are expected to strengthen sustainable agriculture, create new opportunities for small businesses, and reduce pressure on forested areas.
According to the Government of Belize, the goal is to make Belize’s agriculture cleaner and more profitable, helping farmers grow without cutting down forests and opening new markets for local produce.
As the project gets underway, it’s unclear who will manage the funds and whether small farmers will benefit or if larger agribusinesses will take most of it.
