Is Belize City’s “Hangar” at the Centre of a Secret Land Grab?
What’s really going on behind the barricades at Hangar?
Over the weekend, the Belize City Council quietly removed the massive concrete planters that had blocked access to the popular seafront hangout, reopening the area to vehicles. But now, a highly placed source is shedding light on what could be something far more serious: a secret plan to turn over publicly-used seafront land to a handful of Belize’s wealthy elite.
Court documents, government receipts, and land records obtained by our newsroom point to prominent individuals as clients listed in a provisional subdivision approval issued last year for parcels along that same stretch of coastline. These are the same streets where the council abruptly blocked public access in August, claiming it was to stop loitering and crime.
But was it really about crime, or was it about the highly valuable seafront property?
Sources tell us the move to barricade the hangar may have been part of a long-term effort to decommission the seafront road, paving the way for private ownership of what was once a public space used daily by fishers, swimmers, and ordinary Belizeans.
Who’s really behind the push to close off Hangar?
And is Belize City about to lose another piece of its coastline to the rich and well-connected?
We’ll have the story tonight at 6PM on GBM.
