Douglas Langford Makes NCAA Division I Debut
Junior national team standout Douglas Langford Jr. is now part of an elite group of born Belizeans who have played Division One basketball in the United States. When he stepped on to the court on Monday for the San Jose State University Spartans, he joined names like Kirk “Shabba” Smith, Evan “Duck” Garnett, Richard Troyer, Fred Garcia, Englebert Cherrington, Dwight Myvette and Keith “Superman” Acosta. Facing the Utah Utes in the season opener, Langford’s debut was a proud moment for his family. His father describes the experience as a great emotional experience and urges parents to support their children’s dreams, no matter how far-fetched they may seem.

“Great experience. Excited! Couldn’t wait any longer man. From in the summer all the work he has been putting in at college finally pays off. No injury, thank God, during that time and making his first debut at Utah was really big. That’s a big 12 conference that he went and played against. So, for him to make his appearance there and get his foot wet on the court was something big for us. James left when he was fourteen-years-old when he said he ready to go out, I was like I’m not gonna be the one to hold him back or the family. If you wanna go and do this son we will support you one hundred and ten percent and we will back you whatever you want to do. And your dream, if you wanna go and play in the NBA, once you push we’ll be one hundred and ten percent behind you, man. And so far, the reality is creeping and looking to come in place”
Our first chance to see Langford on a major network will be on CBS against Stanford on December thirteenth but those with ESPN Plus can watch the Spartans play UC Santa Barbrara this Saturday at 2 in the afternoon.
