ICJ to Hear Guatemala’s Bid in Sapodilla Case
The International Court of Justice has set the dates for a public hearing on the Sapodilla Cayes territorial dispute. From November twenty-fourth to twenty-sixth, the ICJ will hear Guatemala’s request to intervene in the case. Here’s the backstory: Three years ago, Belize took Honduras to court over the Sapodilla Cayes, asking the ICJ to declare Belize’s sovereignty over the area. A year later, Guatemala stepped in, arguing that the dispute overlaps with its own territorial claim against Belize, also before the World Court. Guatemala says the outcome of the Belize-Honduras case could affect its claim, so it wants a seat at the table. We’ll be watching closely as this unfolds.
