No Suspects yet in Attempt on Freezone Businessman Lives

Who wanted Nitin Buxani dead? That’s the chilling question investigators are trying to answer tonight. On Wednesday, the Corozal Free Zone businessman and his driver were ambushed in a hail of bullets, more than two dozen rounds fired as they made their way into Belize City. Both men survived, but they’re now recovering in the hospital. Police say this wasn’t random, someone was waiting for Buxani near the pedestrian ramp at Mile 8, and they meant business. But why? What could’ve sparked such a violent attack? Today, Assistant Superintendent of Police Stacy Smith was asked whether this could be tied to tensions in the Freezone. So, is there more to this story than meets the eye? Here’s what police had to say.

ASP Stacy Smith, Staff Officer

“Police are investigating  a shooting incident that occurred on Wednesday fifth November, 2025 at approximately five forty p.m. This shooting incident resulted in the injury of Nitin Buxani and Rena Arnold. What the investigation has so far revealed is that Buxani and Arnold were traveling in a vehicle around mile eight on the George Price Highway when they were fired upon by an unknown male person as they approach a pedestrian ramp in that area. Despite being injured, Arnold who was the driver of the vehicle, was able to proceed to a medical institution where they both sought treatment. The investigation into this incident continues.”

“Are you able to speak about what type of rounds were used?”

ASP Stacy Smith

“We saw at least nineteen markers on the ground. The scene which was processed showed that the shells are related to a nine-millimeter ammunition.”

“Something like this, we know that Mr. Buxani operates in the Corozal Freezone area. What are the concerns for police in the Belize district Eastern area as they see someone from the zone being targeted in what looks like an attempted hit?”

ASP Stacy Smith

“The concerns from the police department hinges primarily on the fact that this was a highway. It was around five forty p.m.,  a lot of persons were traveling that area. So certainly it is something that has raised great concern with the police department, and we are pursuing all investigative leaves that we have so far discovered in an effort to successfully bring this investigation to a conclusion.”
