Belize’s Bishop Philip Wright Elected Archbishop of the West Indies

In a proud moment for Belize, Bishop Philip S. Wright has been elected Archbishop of the Church in the Province of the West Indies, becoming the second bishop from Belize to be elected to the position since 1934.

The announcement came during the 42nd Provincial Synod in the Bahamas. Bishop Wright, who has led the Anglican Diocese of Belize for nearly 20 years, called the moment “overwhelming” and pledged to continue serving with humility and purpose.

“You never imagined a day like this would come… It gives me an opportunity to serve the church I love. The church I devoted the majority of my life…”, he stated.

Leader of the Opposition Tracy Panton offered congratulations on behalf of the United Democratic Party and her extended family in a post on social media, stating, “Bishop Wright’s elevation to this esteemed office is a testament to his extraordinary leadership, spiritual depth, and unwavering devotion to the service of God’s people.”

As Archbishop-elect, Wright spoke at the 42nd synod, whose immediate focus was youth engagement, while also ensuring the church remains a vital voice on regional issues.
