The Ministry of Transport says new technology are also on the way to help with reduce the fatalities being seen on Belize’s highways.

Chief Executive Officer Chester Williams revealed that the ministry is acquiring speed guns, body cameras for officers, and dash cameras for patrol vehicles.

“These dash cams are going to be very crucial. Many times we have our traffic mobiles conducting highway patrol, so the dashcamwill be able to pick up video footage of the behavior of drivers when they’re stopped by the officers,” Williams said.

The footage will also capture drivers who attempt to evade police, which will also serve as evidence for prosecution.

Williams said amendments to traffic laws will also go before the House of Representatives soon, including “stiffer penalties” for drunk driving. He said that some cases will lead drivers’ licences being “revoked for life”.

“The driver’s licence that you possess is a privilege that you have. It’s not a ‘right.’ And while you do have the privilege, then you must make sure that you use it the right way,” Williams added.
