Flash Flood Alert Issued as Rivers Rise Across Belize

The government is warning residents to brace for possible flooding as heavy rains continue to impact several regions. A Flash Flood Alert is now in effect for inland West, central areas, the central coast, and inland southern Belize.

According to a government notice, flooding conditions are expected within the next 24 hours along the Belize River at More Tomorrow and downstream communities, as well as on the Sibun River at Freetown Sibun and the Sittee River at Kendal. The Golden Stream River at Hellgate in Region 11 is also at risk.

Officials report that river levels are rising in multiple areas. The Mopan River near Benque Viejo Town is increasing, while the Macal River continues to spill at the Vaca Facility. The Belize River is approaching flood stage at More Tomorrow, and the Sibun River has already reached flood levels. The Sittee River is at bankfull stage, signalling imminent overflow.

Residents in high-risk zones marked red on the forecast map face the greatest danger of flash floods, while orange areas have medium to high potential. Communities in lime-green-yellow zones have a lower risk but should remain vigilant.

Authorities urge the public to monitor weather updates and exercise caution when travelling near rivers and low-lying areas.
