PM Briceño Congratulates Bishop Wright on Historic Archbishop Appointment

Prime Minister John Briceño has congratulated Bishop Philip S. Wright on his election as Archbishop of the Church in the Province of the West Indies.

In a statement, the PM described the milestone as “a moment of pride and distinction for the Anglican Community in Belize and the rest of the Caribbean.”

Bishop Wright has led the Anglican Diocese of Belize for nearly 20 years and has now become the second Belizean to hold the post since 1934. He called the appointment “overwhelming” and said it gives him an opportunity to continue serving the church he has devoted most of his life to. “You never imagined a day like this would come. It gives me an opportunity to serve the church I love,” he said.

“Archbishop-elect Wright is recognised as an influential figure who promotes meaningful engagement between the church and state on critical matters, such as education, social development, and justice,” the statement added.

Leader of the Opposition Tracy Panton also congratulated Bishop Wright on Tuesday. Panton called Wright’s elevation a testament to his “extraordinary leadership, spiritual depth, and unwavering devotion to the service of God’s people.”
