Village Council Calls Out Alcalde in Growing Rift
The Indian Creek Village Council is calling for an urgent meeting with Maya leaders amid ‘rising tensions’ with the village’s Alcalde.
In letters sent to the Maya Leaders Alliance, the President of the Toledo Alcalde Association (TAA), and the President of DAVCO, Village Council Chairman Domingo Choc accused the Alcalde of acting independently, disregarding council decisions, and spreading misinformation.
“We can no longer operate with an Alcalde who is acting contrary to the decisions of the Village Council and who has presented false information against us as a governing body,” Choc wrote.
The council is also demanding a public apology after the Alcalde allegedly told residents during a recent public meeting that the council was selling land to foreigners. A claim the council strongly denies.
“Such accusations are false and defamatory,” the council noted, adding that the comments have damaged the village’s reputation and public trust. In its letter to the Alcalde, the council warned that “if this request is not addressed promptly, the Village Council will be compelled to proceed with further legal action.”
To address the growing divide, the Village Council has invited leaders from DAVCO, TAA, and the Maya Leaders Alliance to a community meeting on November 21 at 1:00 p.m. at the Indian Creek Community Centre.
