Prime Minister John Briceño praised the government’s decision to gain back the national Boledo operation. At today’s House Meeting, PM Briceño said the system had been in the hands of a “UDP crony” for more than a decade and depriving the public of significant revenue.

“This boledo was given to a UDP crony for about 10 or 11 years. Monies that could have come to the coffers of this government and for the people of this country,” Briceño said.

According to the Prime Minister, records show that the same “UDP crony” later appeared in court as “an interested party when all along he said that he had no interest”.

Briceño reported that the rebranded ‘Fi We Boledo’ earned $123.2 million in sales during its first financial year and returned $105 million in winnings to the public.

After expenses, the government recorded $16.7 million in net earnings for April 2024 to March 2025. “It is projected to have profits of way over 20 million dollars” in the second year, Briceño added.

In October, it was reported that BGLL has contributed 22 million dollars to the National Health Insurance programme. Dr Ramon Figueroa said the funding has been vital for expanding NHI services across Belize.
