SC Hubert Elrington Suspended for 6 Months Over Grave Misconduct

The General Legal Council (GLC) has ordered the suspension of Senior Counsel Hubert Elrington from the practice of law for six months following findings of grave professional misconduct. The decision also mandates Elrington to pay restitution of $6,000 to complainant Orpha Martinez.

The Council found that Elrington accepted $6,000 from Martinez to file a claim against Scotia Bank Belize but failed to institute the claim for several years. He also neglected to keep the complainant informed and breached an undertaking to repay the funds in settlement of the complaint.

Despite being given an opportunity to show cause, Elrington argued that the matter was settled and claimed the complaint was statute-barred due to its age. He further cited his 50-year career and offered voluntary legal services as mitigation. However, the Council rejected these arguments, noting his failure to honor previous commitments and lack of compliance with professional standards.

Under Section 16(2) of the Legal Profession Act, the Council imposed sanctions aimed at maintaining public confidence in the integrity of the legal profession. The suspension will remain in effect for six months and may be extended if restitution is not fully paid.
