Trump Pushes “Near” Ukraine Peace Deal

United States President Donald Trump says he remains “hopeful and optimistic” that a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia can be achieved following high-level talks in Switzerland over the weekend.

Trump described the discussions as productive and suggested that a framework for ending the war is closer than ever. His comments come as Ukraine and Russia offer sharply different reactions to the US-backed proposals.

In Kyiv, President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed gratitude to international partners after Trump had earlier claimed that Ukraine had shown “zero gratitude” for US efforts. Zelensky publicly thanked several world leaders for their continued support, signalling that Ukraine remains engaged in the diplomatic process.

Meanwhile, the Kremlin reacted cautiously but positively. Russian officials said certain elements of the United States’ proposal “could form the basis” of a future peace agreement. President Vladimir Putin added that the version of the deal seen by Moscow aligns with previous discussions held with US representatives.

The United States continues to push for a negotiated settlement, Ukraine insists on terms that protect its territorial integrity, and Russia aims to secure conditions favourable to its strategic interests.
