Delecia Flowers’ Family Wants Closure One Month After Her Murder
It’s been one month since thirty-five-year-old Delecia Flowers was brutally killed inside her Belize City home, beaten and slashed, while her teenage daughter lay injured nearby. Her death was one of several shocking acts of violence against women in October, a month meant to raise awareness about domestic abuse. Today, Belize joins the global movement for Sixteen Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, a campaign calling on all of us to take a stand. Earlier, we spoke with Delecia’s brother, Delroy Moody. He shared the heartbreak his family is living through and his thoughts on what it will take to stop this cycle of violence.
On the Phone: Delroy Moody, Brother of Deceased
“We still go to a lot of tribulation right now because since my sister passed away, she mi have my nephew and my lee brother, the youngest one and it kinda rough.”
Britney Gordon
“I know it’s been hard, but how have you guys been coping?”
On the Phone: Delroy Moody
“Like with my sister, she lately call me just now and me and she mi di talk about my lee breda and my lee nephew concerns. But then my understanding, she and mama going court directly. So I might have to go down, go deal with that too. Because, I don’t know, look like they got personal family thing going on that side, but then we di try to get to the point, but we can’t sit and talk to my ma.”
Britney Gordon
“So would you say that the loss of Ms. Delecia has affected you guys in many different ways? Bringing a rift in the family?”
On the Phone: Delroy Moody
“Yes, ma’am. Yeah. Different kind of way. To be honest, mama, I live with a wife fifteen years and out of that fifteen years, I go through mi lee thing with my wife, but I never knocked my wife or nothing like that. So before anything happened concerning killing murder or anything like that. So I just hold my peace, and you know what? If i have to go and I take a walk, I just go two, three days and just do me. That’s how I feel.”
Britney Gordon
“So do you think that there’s a problem in Belize right now regarding the treatment of women and children?”
On the Phone: Delroy Moody
“I think to me, ney got man weh got anger the way I see the drugs play a big role in the drugs and alcohol play a big role in here.”
Britney Gordon
“Definitely. Have you guys received any updates on Ms. Delecia’s case in terms of a charge?”
On the Phone: Delroy Moody
“No ma’am. Nobody not saying nothing. Nobody not tell me nothing. My mom not even call me nor talk to me or tell me nothing.”
