E. coli Found in Drinking Water, But BWS Says Supply Is Safe

A recent national survey has raised serious concerns after finding high levels of E. coli in drinking water across Belize.

The results come from the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey 7, released by the Statistical Institute of Belize last Friday. Using UNICEF’s testing standards, the survey found signs of contamination in water samples from both urban and rural households.

Belize Water Services (BWS) responded quickly, stating that the findings do not accurately reflect the quality of water they treat and supply. In a press release, BWS explained that its water is tested daily using international standards and that any contamination likely occurs after the water leaves its facilities.

The release went on to state, “Crucially, none of the findings cited in the report originated from BWS’s treatment or distribution systems.”

The MICS7 survey was done in partnership with UNICEF and the Government of Belize.
