A fatal crash and several other collisions over the weekend has raised even more concerns about driver safety on Belize’s highways.

On Saturday, a van collided with a house being towed by a truck on the Southern Highway near San Juan Village. The van driver, identified as Pastor Julian Bol, died at the scene. He was travelling to collect workers for his son’s wedding. His daughter later posted online, “Will miss you forever dad, I love you.”

Earlier this year, the Department of Transport (DoT) implemented a new regulation when transporting houses and oversized structures on public roads. “Movement will only be permitted between the hours of 9:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. daily,” DoT announced in August. “Failure to comply with these regulations will result in immediate enforcement actions, including the impounding of vehicles, fines, and suspension of permits.”

Also on Saturday, a white GMC Terrain was involved in an accident near the Mullins River junction. No injuries were reported.

On Sunday, a rented GMC Terrain flipped on the Coastal Road, landing in a drain after striking a sign. No confirmed injuries were reported.

Responding to another Sunday accident on the Hummingbird Highway, the Ministry of Infrastructure Development stated, “The truth is no matter how many safety features we put on our road, the responsibility is on the driver.”
