Possible Motive for Fatal Shooting of Belize City Man
Twenty‑eight‑year‑old Jahmy Belgrave was gunned down yesterday on East Canal in Belize City. Belgrave, a father of three with another child on the way, was targeted while visiting his children.
Police report, “Upon leaving the area, an unknown male person fired several shots in his direction, causing his injuries. Jahmy Belgrave was transported to the KHMH, where he later succumbed to his injuries.”
His sister told News Five that Belgrave had recently returned from San Pedro, where he had tried to relocate and earn an income. He moved there earlier this year to escape conflicts with men he once considered friends, but life proved too difficult. “Because whenever he works, the police will make it bad for him because of his reputation, I guess, and his past life… San Pedro is expensive, so he decided to come back like two to three weeks ago,” she said.
Back in Belize City, Belgrave often visited the area in East Canal to see his children in the evenings. Though he was known to have ties to the George Street gang and a history of run‑ins with the law, his sister said he was trying to leave that past behind and focus on his family.
She described him as someone who tried to guide younger relatives away from the mistakes he had made. “He used his experience and his life and his mistake to mold his brothers and his nephews not to make that same mistake that he made. He constantly have talk with them, he showed them examples.”
But he couldn’t escape his past. “He had issues with some of the guys that he once called friends,” his sister said, adding that she believes those conflicts led to his death. “He didn’t want this because he relocated because of all the issues, all the threats.”
The news of his death has now reopened old wounds for the family. “It shatters again because he’s the second son in eight years from my mother who passed away. Her two oldest kids, oldest boys. So it just open back wound, it brings back memories for us.”
Belgrave leaves behind three children, ages nine and five, and a fourth child expected soon. “He’s everything for them. He go all out for his kids,” his sister said.
