Electrical Fault Suspected in Hibiscus Street Fire
Sixty-seven-year-old Porfirio Cardona says his family escaped with only their lives after Sunday night’s fire destroyed their home on Hibiscus Street, Belize City.
His son, Saul Cardona, remains hospitalised with burns and smoke inhalation.
“We saved nothing,” Cardona said. “We were watching TV, and then we started to smell smoke. When he checked the room, it was already on fire. He tried to take things out that were burning, but he got burnt, and he had to let it go and came looking for me to take me out.”
The fire broke out minutes after firefighters had responded to another blaze on Aloe Vera Street. While the first family managed to salvage property, the Cardonas lost everything.
Police say initial findings point to an electrical fault. Assistant Superintendent of Police Stacy Smith said, “One of the occupants had plugged in an electric fan. After hearing some noise, he checked the room and saw the fan was under fire. The fire then started to spread.”
Human Development officers have carried out an initial assessment. Four young grandchildren are currently staying with relatives.
The family is now asking for any assistance provided. Donations can be made by calling 632-5003.
