Know Your Options: Steps to Guarding Against Domestic Violence

Records from the Belize Crime Observatory show that as of October 2025, Belize had 1,954 reports of domestic violence, with over 1,000 involving intimate partners. The figure is significantly lower than last year’s 2,788 reports, raising questions about whether the decline reflects real progress or reduced confidence in reporting to authorities.

Advocates warn that domestic violence is not always visible and not always physical. The first vice president of Haven House, Sheena Gentle, explained that abuse can take many forms, including emotional, psychological, financial, isolation, and intimidation.

“Abuse can happen between intimate partners, but also between parents and children, or even against the elderly,” she said. Her advice to anyone who suspects they are in an abusive relationship is to trust their instincts. “If you feel something is wrong, it probably is. Do not be afraid to reach out for help.”

She encouraged survivors to document abusive interactions, keep records of threatening messages, and have a safety plan in case situations escalate. Setting boundaries early in relationships and knowing available options are also important steps to protect oneself.

For anyone seeking help, support is available. You can call 911 for police assistance at any time. The National Women’s Commission can be reached at 280‑4284 in Belize City. Haven House Belize offers shelter and services at 613‑4947, and for urgent attention, you can dial 672‑9628.
