Puerto Rico May Not Host Miss Universe 2026
Puerto Rico has put its multimillion-dollar deal to host Miss Universe 2026 on hold. The island has frozen public payments amid growing concerns over alleged illicit activities involving the franchise’s co-owners within the organisation’s global leadership.
The Puerto Rico Tourism Company has stopped all future disbursements, including a pending 1.5 million dollar payment, despite already advancing three million dollars under a nine million dollar contract.
Tourism director Willianette Robles spoke in a local television programme, stating that the Puerto Rican government is demanding full audits, a clearly accountable authority and a renegotiated agreement before releasing more funds. She warned that Puerto Rico could withdraw as host if the organisation fails to comply.
The decision follows the series of controversies involving co-owners of the franchise, Raul Rocha Cantu and Jakkaphong “Anne” Jakrajutatip.
Rocha Cantu is under investigation for alleged ties to drug trafficking and money laundering, while Jakrajutatip is currently a fugitive facing fraud charges.
Officials say the move is about protecting public money. “The investment will not be made without a tangible return for Puerto Rico,” Robles added.
The pageant, announced last year by Governor Jenniffer González Colón, is scheduled for November 2026 but now faces uncertainty.
