Prefab House Builders Thank Ministry for “Constructive Discussions”

The Pre-Fabricated House Builders and Movers of Belize said talks with Chief Executive Officer Chester Williams and transport officials on December 23 were “amicable and constructive,” following public concern over rules that left completed homes stuck in yards.

The industry has faced delays after updated regulations limited how completed homes can be transported. This affected deliveries of some finished houses. Builders said the measures risked driving up costs and affecting affordable housing.

Williams said on Tuesday that the ministry is listening, not reversing policy. “We are not walking back on nothing. We are putting in place a system temporarily until we can discuss,” he said. He said that Cabinet approval is required.

He added recent incidents involving prefab homes were not caused by poor safety practices. Under current guidelines, homes up to twenty feet wide may be transported whole, while larger structures must be moved in sections.

“The outcomes aligned closely with the collaborative proposed solutions, demonstrating a shared goal of protecting road users without unnecessarily hindering affordable housing deliveries,” the group added in its letter. “We look forward to the swift rollout of these agreed enhancements and remain fully committed to supporting the Department in ensuring the highest standards of road safety for all Belizeans.”
