Josue Sic Walks Free After Two-Year Sentence Overturned

Tonight, a man once convicted of a shocking crime is walking free. Forty-eight-year-old Josue Sic, who was sentenced to two years in prison for sexually assaulting a five-year-old child, is no longer behind bars. Last Thursday, December eighteenth, High Court Justice Candace Nanton delivered a twenty-seven-page ruling that overturned Sic’s conviction and sentence, calling the original verdict “unsafe.” The decision effectively quashed the conviction and set Sic free. Justice Nanton explained that the court found merit in two key grounds of appeal, making the conviction unreliable. She added, “Given this finding, the court does not need to consider whether the sentence was unduly severe.” The judge also noted that the matter has been adjourned to decide whether a retrial will be ordered. For now, each party will bear its own legal costs. It’s worth noting that Sic had been out on bail since February, after securing a stay of execution while his appeal was pending.
