CitCo Calls for United Action on Mental Health Crisis

The Belize City Council says homelessness and mental illness are serious, deeply human issues and they’re approaching the matter with compassion for those affected and concern for public safety. These challenges are complex and require a coordinated response from multiple agencies. The issue recently hit close to home when a council employee was harmed by someone in crisis, a stark reminder of the risks when these problems go unaddressed. While mental health care isn’t the council’s legal mandate, and CitCo doesn’t have the medical expertise to lead such efforts, they’ve partnered with other agencies in the past and remain ready to do so again. Council officials believe a coordinated, expert-led approach will make Belize City safer, cleaner, and more welcoming, while ensuring vulnerable people get the care they need. They say they’re committed to collaborating on any meaningful effort to tackle this challenge.
