Belize City Police Seize AR-15, Ammunition in Major Bust

Belize City police recovered an AR-15 rifle, over 100 rounds of ammunition, and other weapons during a targeted operation on Tuesday, adding to a year of significant firearm and drug seizures nationwide. The items were found hidden in a mangrove area off Nutmeg Street in the Lake Independence neighborhood.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Stacy Smith confirmed the discovery came from an intelligence-led operation involving the Special Branch and officers from Precinct Two, Eastern Division. “On Tuesday, thirtieth December 2025, at around three p.m., an intelligence-led operation resulted in the discovery of an AR-15 rifle, 105 rounds of 5.56 mm ammunition, two drum magazines, 7.45 mm rounds, and two bulletproof vests,” Smith said.

The items were labeled as recovered property. The latest seizure brings Belize Police Department’s total for 2025 to 234 firearms and 7,477 rounds of ammunition. During the year, authorities arrested 194 people for firearm and ammunition offenses. Of the firearms seized, 123 were 9 mm pistols, 14 were high-powered rifles, and the rest included .38 caliber guns and shotguns.

Drug seizures have also been substantial. Police report confiscating 705,638 grams of cannabis, 41,784 grams of cocaine, and more than 5,000 grams of crack cocaine in 2025. A total of 1,562 people were charged for drug-related offenses.
