CARICOM Heads Meet in Emergency Session Following Military Action in Venezuela
The Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) convened an emergency meeting early on January 3 amid reports of military action in Venezuela.
In a statement issued following the meeting, CARICOM said it is actively monitoring the rapidly evolving situation, describing it as one of grave concern to the region. The regional body warned that the developments could have implications for neighbouring countries.
As we have reported, the United States launched a large-scale military strike on Venezuela and claims it has captured President Nicolás Maduro and his wife in an overnight operation. U.S. officials say Maduro has been indicted in New York on drug trafficking and weapons charges and will face trial in the United States.
Explosions were reported in Caracas as Venezuela declared a national emergency, accused the U.S. of attacking civilian and military targets, and demanded proof of life for Maduro and the first lady. It remains unclear who is currently governing the country.
