BEL Sends Second Crew to Jamaica Post-Hurricane Melissa
A second team of Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) power line technicians is now on the ground in Jamaica, continuing regional efforts to restore electricity after Hurricane Melissa battered the island’s power grid.
The team departed Belize on Sunday to assist Jamaica Public Service Company Limited, the country’s sole electricity distributor. The deployment follows the completion of work by BEL’s first crew, which was sent to Jamaica in November 2025 and returned home in December.
BEL’s second contingent is led by Technical Supervisor Jeremy Jex and includes power line technicians Gregory Kerr, Brian Gentle, Emry Gill, Owen Nolberto, Paul McCalla and Andres Catch. They are working alongside regional crews coordinated through the Caribbean Electric Utility Services Corporation.
Hurricane Melissa struck Jamaica as a Category 5 storm on October 28, 2025, with winds exceeding 180 miles per hour. The hurricane caused extensive damage to homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure, including major sections of the national electricity network.
Current estimates place Jamaica’s total damage and loss between $8 billion and $15 billion USD.
